Format for IELTS
IELTS tests 4 basic skills namely reading, writing, listening and speaking. The Speaking test is conducted face-to-face with a certified examiner who tests the candidate for his or her oral language. There are 2 versions of the test namely Academic or General Training. Academic IELTS is to be taken by international students who want to apply to English medium programs in Chinese universities.
All the candidates also have the same listening and speaking component. It is the reading and writing components which differ. The 9 band score system grade is used for IELTS. The system of scoring is understood worldwide and test materials are designed to ensure same difficulty levels across different versions of the test.
IELTS test centres also make provisions for test takers with special needs. If the students require a modified version of the test, the Test Centre has to provide 3 months notice. This notice period is essential for the modified test version to be formulated. Special administrative arrangements such as extra time require at least 6 week's prior notice.
Registration for IELTS
IELTS has a specified fee for its test. Both versions of the test cost the same. The fee has to be paid when the IELTS Application Form is submitted. The fee for the test is around 1700 RMB. The total cost of the test works out to be around 2000 RMB. In mainland China, the British Council of China along with the National Education and Examination Authority works for conducting this test on behalf of the IELTS network. The test is administered at around 40 test centres in the world.
Those who postpone or cancel the application more than 5 weeks prior to the test will receive a refund without a charge for administration. Students who canel or postpone the test during 5 weeks of the date when the test is conducted will have to pay the full fee. The only exception can be made in case of those who have a medical reason. Those students who give a medical certificate within 5 days of the test date are given a refund minus the administrative cost.
