China has series of scholarships for foreign students to promote mutual understanding and good bilateral relations with other nations. The government sponsors the studies of international students from a vast number of nations across the globe.

China Scholarship Council

China Scholarship Council referred to as CSC has been designated with the task of enrolment and administration of Chinese Government Scholarship programs, by the Ministry of Education in this country. As per the recommendations of the Ministry of Education, academic programs in a wide variety of fields such as science, engineering, medicine, philosophy, literature and history.

Chinese Government Scholarship Programs

The Chinese government provides support for a total of 7 scholarship programs. The first of this is the bilateral program which includes complete or partial scholarships as per educational agreements/MOUs between the Chinese government and other nations as well as international organizations and institutions. Scholarships are provided for courses ranging from undergraduate programs to doctoral degree programs. General as well as senior scholar programs are also funded as part of this program.

Another important scholarship program is the Chinese University Program. It is a full scholarship to provide support to Chinese universities in certain provinces and autonomous regions. It aims to recruit outstanding international students for graduate studies in the country. This scholarship program is only available for postgraduate and doctoral degree programs.

The Great Wall program is a full scholarship for UNESCO to sponsor students in developing nations to complete degree programs and carry out research in China. Senior and general scholars programs are funded by this scholarship. Students must apply to the National Commission for UNESCO from their own country for obtaining this scholarship.

EU Program is for a full scholarship to enable students from European nations to study and conduct research in China. This program has been formulated to promote understanding and good relations between China and the EU nations. EU Students from undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, general/senior scholar programs can apply for this scholarship. The applications should reach the Office for Education and Culture in the Chinese mission to the EU.

AUN (ASEAN University Network) Scholarship program is for promoting academic exchange between China and ASEAN nations. Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional forum comprising countries such as India and Bangladesh. The AUN Scholarship program is only open to postgraduate and doctoral students. Applicants who want to avail of this scholarship should apply to the AUN Secretariat.

PIF program is for enabling students from Pacific Island countries to complete their higher education in China. This scholarship is for Bachelor’s degree programs, postgraduate as well as doctoral programs. Applicants can also include those who want to be part of general and senior scholar programs as well. Applicants who want to get this scholarship need to apply through the PIF Secretariat.

WMO (World Meteorological Organization)Program sponsors students who study topics such as meteorology and hydrology in China. Their tuition fees are waived and they are also provided free accommodation on the campus. Along with this, they are also able to access comprehensive medical and healthcare insurance. This scholarship program is applicable for only bachelor’s and master’s programs.

Scholarships provided by local governments in China

There are many scholarships provided by local governments in China as well. The Fujian scholarship is provided to students with the aim of reform in education in the Fujian province. This scholarship aims to attract more foreign students to Fujian. The Tianjin government also provides scholarships for foreign students enrolled in bachelor’s degree or higher level studies in Tianjin with the aim of attracting the best foreign students to this province.

Sichuan Provincial Government scholarship is provided to international students enrolled in higher educational institutions in this province. The scholarship is provided for vocational an junior colleges and full time higher educational institutions approved by the Ministry of Education in China. The Hubei Provincial scholarship is provided by the government here for supporting students in undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, general scholar an special scholar programs.

British Council China Scholarship

The British Council in China offers up to 15 scholarships for UK students who want to study in China. The scholarship is open to British passport holders or Irish passport holders for Northern Ireland domicile). Other Scholarships

University scholarships are available for international students as well. Enterprise scholarships such as Runhe scholarship are also available for students. University scholarships are for students who apply to specific higher educational institutions.

While China is an inexpensive place to study, there are also several scholarship programs which are very suitable for those who are on a strict budget. Financing higher studies is very easy for international students in China.
